HOW TO USE TIPPITY
A quick guide to every feature.
01 · THE BASICS
Enter the check and choose a tip
Tap the green Check Amount box and type the digits in order. They flow in from the right like a cash register, so typing 1, 2, 4, 2, 5 shows 124.25 — there is no decimal point to find. Then tap a tip chip, or Custom for any other percentage.
In the United States, enter the sales tax and any service fees in the Taxes & Fees box. Tippity then works out the tip on the pre-tax subtotal. That is the usual way to tip, and it is how most restaurants work out the suggested tip amounts printed on your check.
Prefer to tip on the full amount? Put the full amount in the Check Amount box and leave taxes at zero. Outside the US you simply enter the total. Either way, the Total with Tip sits large in the bar at the bottom of the screen and never scrolls out of view.
Tap Clear, top right, to reset everything. Your amounts survive a quick trip to another app and clear automatically after half an hour away.
02 · CAPTURING
Capture the check with your camera
Tap Capture Check at the top of the screen and point the camera at the whole receipt. The camera finds the edges, straightens the paper and takes the picture for you. Already have a photo? Tap Choose Photo to use one from your library.
Tippity reads every line and draws a green box around the subtotal, taxes and total — outside the US, the total alone. It reads the words next to each number, so it can tell the total from a table number, an item price or a suggested tip.
Check the numbers under the photo. If the green box has landed on the wrong line, tap the right one and the numbers update. When they look right, tap Use These Numbers and the calculator fills itself in. Captured taxes land in the Taxes & Fees box, where you can still correct them.
Capture tips
Flatten the check and keep it out of glare for the best results. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, hard-to-read receipts get a second look from the on-device model. Nothing ever leaves your phone.
03 · ROUNDING UP
Round up to a clean total
When the total is not a whole amount, the Round Up button lights up. One tap raises the tip just enough to land the total on the next whole dollar, euro or pound.
The bar shows the tip percentage this works out to, and the button changes to Undo Round Up so you can change your mind. On smaller checks the percentage can rise noticeably, so keep an eye on it.
04 · SPLITTING
Split the check, then text your friends
When your total is ready, tap Split Check at the bottom of the screen and use – and + to set how many people are paying. The sheet shows the check, the tip and the total, with each person’s share beside it — rounded up to the cent so the group never comes up short.
If one person pays the whole bill, tap Text Fellow Diners. Messages opens with each share already written — add your friends in the To field, edit the message if you like, and send.
05 · TRAVELING
See the cost in your home currency
When you are abroad, Tippity detects the country you are in, shows the local currency and offers the tip percentages that are customary there. It also fetches today’s exchange rates and converts your check back into your home currency — whenever both your home country and the country you are visiting are on this list:
